Sculpture and the Land

Andy Goldsworthy

Common Ground were first drawn to Andy Goldsworthy's work in the early 1980s. We invited him to contribute to our first book, Second Nature (Jonathan Cape, 1984 - out of print, though we still sell Andy's distinctive poster for the exhibition which accompanied its launch) , and helped to arrange the London exhibition of his photoworks, Rain sun snow hail mist calm, in 1985.

In 1986, with help from Artangel, we commissioned Andy to work on Hampstead Heath, London. His constructions from leaves, branches, snow, mud and rocks explored many themes evolved further in later works. An exhibition is available for hire, recording this time as a daily diary.

Andy also participated in the project Trees, Woods and The Green Man, contributing the first ever fine-art exhibition at the Natural History Museum, London in September 1989. A book, Leaves, was published by Common Ground (now out of print) containing images of the leaf sculptures Andy created for the exhibition, working on a plot of land leased from the Buccleuch estate in southern Scotland.

Andy created the wooden Entrance for Hooke Park Woods in 1986 as part of our New Milestones project, and more recently contributed a series of striking images for our work on Rivers, Rhynes and Running Brooks, which were issued as greetings cards.
